Job summary

City of Detroit's Law Department seeks an Arraignment Prosecutor to appear at felony and misdemeanor arraignments in the 36th District Court and advise on pretrial release conditions in line with Michigan law.

As Administrative Special Services Staff III, you will review police files, confer with the Officer-in-Charge and defense counsel, and maintain bond recommendation records while handling case matters with independence and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Michigan Court Rules and Michigan statutory law pertaining to bond and pretrial release.
• Knowledge of Criminal law and procedure.
• Knowledge of the 36th District Court settlement with the ACLU in its lawsuit involving pretrial release.
• Proficient in evaluating the strength of the prosecution’s case.
• Proficient in developing pretrial release recommendations.
• Effective in oral argument before a Magistrate of Court.
• Ability to display independent judgment and maturity.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Experience in the trial of criminal cases.
• Familiarity with case management systems, especially Prosecution by Karpel (PBK)

Responsibilities

• Appear daily at morning and afternoon arraignments of defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors and recommend pretrial release conditions.
• Review the police file and confer with the Officer-in-Charge and defense attorney to learn the facts of the case.
• Formulate a pretrial release recommendation within Michigan law based on the facts and criminal history.
• Maintain an ongoing record of bond recommendations and decisions in arraignment cases.
