Job summary

The City of Falls Church seeks a Crew Leader – Sanitary Sewer to supervise sewer maintenance crews and equipment operators on on-site public works projects. You will assign tasks, monitor performance, review maps, and ensure compliance with plans and safety rules.

Crew Leader – Sanitary Sewer

A Crew Leader provides supervision to a group of Laborers and/or Equipment Operators engaged in general maintenance and repair work. An employee in this class assigns, inspects, and evaluates the work of semiskilled or unskilled workers in a variety of settings in the performance of a wide variety of tasks. The appropriate Superintendent assigns areas of work and standards to be met in detail, and the work performed is checked in process and upon completion.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Ensures compliance with plans, specifications, policies and regulations;
  • Supervises daily operation of sewer maintenance crews and sewer cleaning equipment;
  • Reviews sewer system maps and makes corrections as necessary;
  • Inspects various jobs in progress and makes recommendations for changes in practices;

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Three years of experience as a Supervisor or Equipment Operator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), issued by the state of residence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA-approved courses;
  • computer software knowledge;
  • traffic control knowledge;
  • sewer and street equipment knowledge;
  • experience supervising employees and private contractors;
  • ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English;
  • physically be able to perform work in adverse weather conditions.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an emergency employee position. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operation, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are subject to call‑in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Salary and Benefits: $65,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications. Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, plus overtime emergency hours as required.
