Job summary

Colliers Engineering & Design in Massachusetts is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead field surveys on a range of projects including boundary, topographic, construction, transportation, utility, and land development. You will guide field crews, ensure accuracy, safety, and client communication, and serve as the primary field representative for projects.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of field survey experience and 2+ years as Crew Chief.
  • Proficient with data collectors, data collection techniques, robotic instruments, total stations and leveling.
  • Experience with or ability to learn 3D scanners.
  • Self-starter with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform advanced field surveys within project scope and budget, using efficient methods per standards.
  • Interact with project site supervisors and client field representatives.
  • Prepare accurate, detailed field notes and reports promptly.
  • Perform in-field calculations for construction stakeout and various land surveys with minimal office support.
  • Review safety checklists and instruct crew on hazards and PPE.
  • Maintain, transport, and operate surveying instruments and equipment.
  • Operate survey vehicle according to company policy.
  • Mentor and train junior field staff to support career growth.
  • Projects include State DOT design/ROW surveys, utility, 3D scanning, topographic, boundary and ALTA surveys.

Overview

Are you an experienced survey professional who enjoys leading field operations, mentoring team members, and working on a diverse range of projects? Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to join our growing Survey/Geospatial team in Massachusetts. As a Survey Crew Chief, you will lead field survey crews on a variety of projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, transportation, utility, and land development assignments. You'll be responsible for planning and executing field surveys, ensuring data accuracy, maintaining safety standards, and serving as the primary field representative for project teams and clients. This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge survey technology, collaborate with industry-leading professionals, and contribute to projects that help shape communities throughout the region. Survey Crew Chiefs utilize advanced equipment including GNSS/GPS systems, robotic total stations, data collectors, and other specialized survey instruments to collect and deliver high-quality field data.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and perform advanced field surveys within the defined project scope and budget, using the most efficient methods, and in accordance with applicable standards of practice.
  • Interact with project site supervisors and client field representatives.
  • Prepare accurate, detailed field notes and reports of daily activity in a timely manner.
  • Perform in-field calculations for construction stakeout and various land surveys with minimal assistance from office support team.
  • Prepare or receive from the PM, the Health, and Safety Checklists. Review and instruct other crew personnel on all safety hazards, PPE, etc. associated with the work being performed.
  • Maintain, transport, and operate the instruments and equipment associated with surveying land and preparing the job site for a survey.
  • Operate and maintain the survey vehicle in accordance with the Company vehicle manual.
  • Mentor and train junior field staff to facilitate career advancement.
  • Projects include: State DOT design and ROW surveys, utility surveys, 3D scanning, Horizontal and vertical control surveys, construction layout, residential and commercial properties, Topographic surveys, aerial ground control surveys, Boundary and ALTA surveys.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of field survey experience and at least 2+ year of experience as a Crew Chief, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Candidates must be proficient with data collectors, data collection techniques, robotic instruments, conventional field note-keeping, total stations and leveling.
  • Experience with or ability to learn the use of 3D scanners.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter, with little need for supervision once provided with a work assignment.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record required. MVR will be checked and monitored.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.

Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program.
