Job summary

Service First FCU in Sioux Falls, SD is seeking a Credit Card & Consumer Loan Underwriter. You will review applications, credit reports, and supporting docs to assess borrower creditworthiness, verify employment, and determine approvals or denials.

You will collaborate with loan officers, prepare required documents, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain records, and stay current on underwriting best practices. A member-focused attitude and strong communication are essential.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in credit card and consumer loan underwriting.
• Knowledge of credit card and consumer lending products, underwriting guidelines, and applicable regulations.
• Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a member-focused attitude.
• Proficiency with loan origination systems, credit bureau platforms, and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze applications, credit reports, and supporting documentation to assess borrower creditworthiness.
• Verify employment of applicants and ensure accuracy; process additional proof of income requirements including tax returns.
• Make informed decisions on approvals, denials, or conditions based on underwriting guidelines and risk assessment.
• Collaborate with loan officers and support staff to ensure a seamless application process and effective member communication.
• Prepare documents as needed as part of the loan and credit card process.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and industry standards related to credit card and lending practices.
• Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and communicate rationale to stakeholders.
• Assist in researching, developing, and implementing new programs, products, and processes.
• Entering notes on members’ accounts.
• Maintain accurate and complete files and records; vaulting/scanning of work in a timely/accurate manner.
• Monitor portfolios for risk and work with management to address delinquency or potential issues.
• Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in underwriting.
• Provide training and support to other staff regarding underwriting guidelines and processes.
• Maintain a filing system and procedures to monitor that the required documentation is received and maintained properly.
• Communicates regularly with interrelated departments within the credit union.
• Other duties as assigned

Key Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Review and analyze applications, credit reports, and supporting documentation to assess borrower creditworthiness.

Required Education and Qualifications:

• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in credit card and consumer loan underwriting, preferably within a credit union or financial institution.
• In-depth knowledge of credit card and consumer lending products, underwriting guidelines, and applicable regulations (e.g., RESPA, FCRA, ECOA).
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate financial information and risk factors effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a member-focused attitude.
• Proficiency in loan origination systems, credit bureau platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with automated underwriting systems.
