Job summary

Service First FCU seeks a Credit Card & Consumer Loan Underwriter to assess borrower creditworthiness, verify income, and apply underwriting guidelines. You will collaborate with loan officers to ensure smooth processing and regulatory compliance while maintaining thorough documentation.

The role emphasizes risk assessment, accurate record-keeping, and contributing to program development in a member-focused financial institution.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in credit card and consumer loan underwriting.
• Knowledge of RESPA, FCRA, ECOA regulations.
• Strong analytical and decision‑making skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with loan origination systems, credit bureau platforms, and MS Office.

Key Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Review and analyze applications, credit reports, and supporting documentation to assess borrower creditworthiness.

Verify employment of applicants and ensure accuracy. Process any additional proof of income requirements, including tax returns.

Make informed decisions on approvals, denials, or conditions based on established underwriting guidelines and risk assessment criteria.

Collaborate with loan officers and support staff to ensure a seamless application process and effective communication with members.

Prepare documents as needed as part of the loan and credit card process.

Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, internal policies, and industry standards related to credit card and lending practices.

Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and communicate the rationale for decisions to relevant stakeholders.

Help assist in researching, developing, and implementing new programs, products, and processes.

Entering notes on members’ accounts

Maintain accurate and complete files and records. Vaulting and/or scanning in work in a timely/accurate manner.

Monitor portfolios for risk and work with management to address any delinquency or potential issues.

Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in underwriting.

Provide training and support to other staff members regarding underwriting guidelines and processes.

Maintain a filing system and procedures to monitor that the required documentation is received and maintained appropriately in accordance with policies and procedures.

Communicates regularly with the interrelated departments within the credit union.

Required Education and Qualifications:

• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in credit card and consumer loan underwriting, preferably within a credit union or financial institution.
• In-depth knowledge of credit card and consumer lending products, underwriting guidelines, and applicable regulations (e.g., RESPA, FCRA, ECOA).
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate financial information and risk factors effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a member-focused attitude.
• Proficiency in loan origination systems, credit bureau platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with automated underwriting systems.
