Job summary

Playbill, Inc. partners with a Performing Arts High School in Hudson County, NJ to hire a Set Designer for our spring production of The Pajama Game. The role combines creative design with hands-on leadership of student crews.

Responsibilities include developing a cohesive scenic concept, providing floor plans and elevations, supervising construction, painting, and dressing, mentoring students, managing the budget, attending tech rehearsals, and leading the set strike.

Qualifications

• Experience in scenic design or technical theater, including working with students when possible.
• Ability to collaborate with the Director, Technical Director, and Lighting Designer.
• Knowledge of standard stage construction, rigging safety, and scenic painting techniques.

Responsibilities

• Develop and present a cohesive scenic design concept aligned with the Director's vision and school layout.
• Provide clear floor plans and basic elevations for construction guidance.
• Oversee safe building, painting, and dressing of set pieces; some may be outsourced.
• Mentor and supervise student crew members during school hours.
• Manage the production budget and source materials efficiently.
• Attend Tech Week, make adjustments, and supervise the set strike after closing night.
