Job Title: Crane Operator

Quercus Forest Products is a contractor for Domtar, providing services to meet the expectations of Domtar in the art of chipping.
Purpose:
The crane operator's role is to unload, store, recover, and load tree-length and double-bunk wood safely, efficiently, and productively.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safe unloading of wood for truck drivers and mill personnel, maintaining communication with the mill operator to keep the flow of wood consistent.
- Perform housekeeping and preventive maintenance on the crane to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Specific Duties:
- Check hydraulic oil levels and couplings daily before starting the crane.
- Start and operate the crane, positioning the grapple correctly over the load.
- Ensure safety of personnel around the truck during load pickup.
- Inspect wood visually for species, condition, and age from the crane cab.
- Unload wood in designated locations based on species and age, maintaining rotation.
- Communicate with the mill operator to manage wood flow.
- Perform daily greasing, inspections, and housekeeping in the cab.
- Complete and file maintenance reports daily.
- Weekly inspections of sheaves, bearings, winch, and cables; biannual lubrication and oil changes.
- Report equipment issues promptly and perform emergency stops when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to:
- Climb steps and ladders up to 150 feet.
- Sit for approximately 10 hours daily.
- Visually discern wood species and condition from over 50 feet.
- Coordinate eyes, hands, and feet to operate equipment.
- Communicate via radio and walk at heights of approximately 150 feet.
Prior Experience & Knowledge:
- Experience in operating and maintaining mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of wood species and characteristics of chips and bark.
Skills:
- Excellent hand, eye, and foot coordination for operating the crane and grapple.
Training:
Approximately 10 days of on-the-job training is required.
