Job summary

Chesapeake Shipbuilding is seeking an experienced crane operator for a full-time, on-site role in Salisbury, MD. You will safely move materials and ship components, set up lifts, and drive daily crane operations in alignment with production schedules.

The job emphasizes safety, teamwork, and efficient material handling while complying with all safety regulations. Expect a 40–45+ hour workweek, with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as crane operator or shooting boom forklift.
  • Able to operate 80 ton Grove GRT880 All-Terrain.
  • Able to operate 130 ton Link Belt RTC-8130-2 All-Terrain.
  • Operate various Shooting Boom Forklifts.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently support daily crane and material handling operations by moving materials, equipment, and ship components in accordance with production schedules.
  • Promote a strong work ethic with a focus on safety, efficiency, teamwork, and production while ensuring all lifting operations comply with safety regulations.
  • Transfer loads to construction sites and discharge safely; set up equipment based on load requirements; keep maintenance logs.

ABOUT THE JOB

REPORTS TO

Crane Supervisor / On-Site Foreman / Shipyard Superintendent

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Safely and efficiently support daily crane and material handling operations by moving materials, equipment, and ship components in accordance with production schedules. Promote a strong work ethic with a focus on safety, efficiency, teamwork, and production while ensuring all lifting operations are completed in compliance with company policies and applicable safety regulations.

Essential Functions & Tasks
  • Transfer loads to construction site and discharge safely
  • Ability to bind loads to the crane or lifts
  • Inspect equipment and machinery daily
  • Keep and update maintenance logs and daily activity log
  • Set up equipment based on the load requirements
  • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures
  • Follow instructions from foreman/supervisors on site and keep job site clean
  • All other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Previous experience as a crane operator or shooting boom forklift
  • Able to operate 80 ton Grove GRT880 All-Terrain
  • Able to operate 130 ton Link Belt RTC-8130-2 All-Terrain
  • Operate various Shooting Boom Forklifts
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • All types of physical movement are required for this position to successfully perform the essential functions.
  • Ability to use upper and lower extremities.
  • Ability to work outside in heat, inclement weather, and cold.
  • Ability to crawl, kneel, crouch, climb, and bend around and under equipment, on ladders up to 24' at heights up to 70', stairs, scaffolds, through small accesses, enter inside of tanks, and confined spaces, through hatches, and manholes throughout much of the work shift.
  • Ability to work over bodies of water.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, including loose pack gravel
  • Operate in isolation within the skeleton of ships, wearing heavy protective gear and carrying equipment weighing up to 75lbs.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Normal level of visual acuity needed. Must be able to understand and follow directions. Normal hearing level needed. Hand-eye coordination required.

HAZARDS

Weather, fumes, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, equipment, and vibration.

Shift

Monday – Friday: 40 - 45+ hours per week

Day Shift

6:00am – 2:30pm

Overtime and Weekend required based on business needs
