Job summary

The Town of Needham is seeking a full-time Craftsworker to support the Sewer & Drain team within the Water, Sewer, and Drains division. The role involves technical labor, operating specialized equipment, handwork on current projects, snow/ice treatment, and preparing routine records and reports.

Requirements include a valid MA driver’s license, CDL class A or B, and 1–3 years of related experience. Pre-employment tests per DOT regulations may apply.

  • Ensures safety precautions on public works projects.
  • Prepares logs and reports; responds to inquiries from the public or contractors.
  • Participates in Snow & Ice Program and may assist other DPW projects.

Work Schedule (40 hours/week): Monday-Thursday 6:30am-3:30pm; Friday 6:30am-12:30pm

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled craft work, including construction, maintenance, and repairs to utilities infrastructure related to water, wastewater & stormwater systems; water lines; pipes, manholes, culverts, sewer & drain services.
  • Repairs and maintains water hydrants.
  • Operates a variety of motor driven vehicles and equipment including front end loader, backhoe, excavator, Vactor, Jet – Flush truck etc.; uses a variety of power-driven and hand tools to perform assigned tasks
  • Ensures that all safety precautions are followed while carrying out various public works-related projects.
  • Prepares routine records, logs, and reports; responds to routine inquiries, requests, and complaints from the public or contractors.
  • Mandatory participation in the Snow & Ice Program; may include road treatment, plowing, snow hauling, etc.; provides backup, support, and assistance for other DPW projects as needed.
Requirements
  • Valid MA Driver’s License
  • CDL Class A or B
  • One (1) to three (3) years of directly relevant experience.
  • High school, plus elementary technical training, acquired on the job or through one year or less of technical or business school.
  • Ability to work with a team or independently.
  • Demonstrated communication and customer service skills with members of the public.
Preferred Qualifications Or The Ability To Obtain The Following
  • OSHA 10 Hour Training required at time of hire or the ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • CDL Tanker Endorsement
  • Hoisting License 2A, 1C, 4E, 4G
  • Grade D1 or T1 Water license
  • Water meter knowledge and experience strongly preferred
Pre-Hire Process

For positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including a CDL permit, the Town of Needham conducts pre-employment physicals and drug testing and post-employment random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with U.S. DOT Regulations.
