Job summary

Hanover County Depart of Social Services seeks candidates for a Family Services Specialist in Child Protective Services (CPS) who will respond to reports of abuse and neglect using investigative and social work skills. Telework options are available after completing training and certifications.

The role involves complex social services work including investigations, court coordination, and multi‑disciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field with 2+ years of related experience.
• Experience in family services preferred.
• Ability to work in stressful situations and manage multiple cases.

Responsibilities

• Interview customers to assess needs and risks, and determine appropriate next steps.
• Conduct investigations and assess reports of abuse/neglect for validity.
• Prepare social histories and court-related reports for filings and hearings.
• Coordinate with attorneys, courts, and other agencies to plan services.
• Provide training and guidance to staff and interns as needed.
