Coverage and Bad Faith Litigation Associate | Fully Remote, Los Angeles | $160,000 to $210,000

The back of a parking garage ticket in Los Angeles has a paragraph on it in very small print, and almost every driver in the city has held one in their teeth while reaching for the barrier and never read a word. It says the garage isn't responsible for your car, or anything in your car, or, if you read it the way it's written, most things that could happen anywhere near your car. A lawyer sat down and thought hard about the word "contents" for that. Nobody will ever know who they were, and every day thousands of people feed the result back into a machine with coffee on it.

You've read it before you parked. This job is reading that sort of thing for a living, with more riding on it than a dented bumper.

It's insurance coverage, fully remote from Los Angeles, across D&O, E&O, professional liability, CGL and property policies. You'd write the coverage opinions and the reservation of rights letters, and when a fight over coverage turns into a declaratory relief action or a bad faith case you'd stay with it, taking depositions and handling the law and motion yourself in state and federal court. If your current job is writing the March letter again in October with the names swapped, that'll make a change.

• A coverage opinion on a D&O claim against a company's board
• A reservation of rights on a CGL tender with three exclusions in play
• Deposing the claims handler in a bad faith case
• Opposing summary judgment in a declaratory relief action in federal court

$160,000 to $210,000, and the bonus is worked out on a formula, so you know what it'll be before December. They pay bar dues and CLEs. The firm's mid sized and on the defense side, and the partners will know your name and your files. The hours are 1,950 billable, and if you want fewer they'll talk about it, with the salary coming down to match.
