Job description

Position Summary

This position provides and performs a variety of services associated with the use of technology in courtroom operations, including recording, monitoring, and logging court proceedings; operating video and sound equipment; assistive listening devices; and computer systems. The role requires arranging testing, care, maintenance, and inventory of all technological equipment, providing excellent customer service, and performing a range of administrative duties statewide.

Salary Range: Grade11: $23.65–$32.01 per hour.

Location

Aroostook County Courthouse, Presque Isle, Maine.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and troubleshoot courtroom equipment such as digital recording software (For The Record®), analog recording systems, courtroom sound systems, assistive listening devices, video monitors, DVD/VHS players, interactive video conferencing systems, and MAC/PC systems.
  • Arrange for testing, care, maintenance, and inventory of all technology equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is operating properly, making referrals for repairs and coordinating with service contractors.
  • In the courtroom: validate microphone placement, monitor recordings, adjust volume controls, create detailed log notes, play back recordings and assess quality, and prepare duplicate recordings.
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures for recording court proceedings.
  • Conduct equipment inventories, provide staff training, and develop training materials/checklists.
  • Handle transcript orders, provide cost estimates, and forward relevant materials to the Office of Transcript Operations (OTO).
  • Travel to assigned courts throughout the state as required.
  • Provide administrative support, prepare reports, memoranda, and other court‑related documents.
  • Deliver excellent customer service, communicating effectively with the public, judicial officers, attorneys, and other agencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Operate and maintain a variety of courtroom technologies and computers.
  • Learn detailed computer applications, including recording software.
  • Work with networked computers and pull audio from a network.
  • Type accurately at a minimum of 45 words per minute.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and court staff; maintain excellent customer service skills.
  • Understand court procedures, legal documents, laws, and related factors.
  • Follow clerical procedures and policies as outlined in the Clerk’s Manual and Judicial Branch policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform work with accurate attention to detail.
  • Work independently and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Travel throughout the state and work effectively in a public courtroom setting.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of clerical experience in a clerk’s office or comparable work.
  • Preferred: Experience with courtroom technologies.
