Job summary

St. Mary’s County Government seeks a Special Deputy to provide law enforcement services for the Circuit Courthouse, ensuring security and compliance with applicable laws and policies.

Primary responsibilities include courtroom searches, interior and exterior security checks, access control, and monitoring from the Central Security Room. The role requires firearms handling, rapid decision making, and coordination with court staff and officers.

Qualifications

• Basic understanding of Circuit Courthouse security operations and procedures.
• Knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures.
• Ability to use and maintain firearms and related police issued equipment.
• Ability to work independently on tasks and maintain records.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for prompt and proper action in all matters pertaining to Circuit Court security and related duties.
• Searches courtrooms prior to court commencing, during court recesses and at the conclusion of the court docket.
• Conducts physical interior security checks of the Circuit Courthouse, including courtrooms, meeting spaces, holding cells, office spaces, and restrooms.
• Conducts physical exterior perimeter security checks of the Circuit Courthouse.
• Monitors persons within the Circuit Courthouse and on the exterior perimeter from the Central Security Room.
• Facilitates access as appropriate to controlled areas of the courthouse from within the Central Security Room.
• Maintains radio communications with the assigned Central Security Room Officer.
• Operates metal detector/security devices and x-ray scanning machine.
• Observes spectators, witnesses, victims, and defendants to prevent or quell disturbances on courthouse property.
• Maintains a position within the courtroom during court proceedings to ensure safety of judge/magistrate, jury, and others.
• Takes charge of defendants ordered to pay court costs or custody as directed by the court.
• Maintains control of any prisoners in custody; may transport prisoners as needed.
• Carries out orders and directives of the Judge; completes court paperwork and serves processes when necessary.
• Detains persons suspected of committing crimes.
• Completes agency and MPCTC required training to maintain certification as a law enforcement officer.
• Position designated as non-essential during inclement weather and emergencies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
