Job summary

Vallarta Supermarkets in Bakersfield, CA, is seeking friendly, service-oriented individuals for the Courtesy Clerk role at our front end. You’ll greet customers, bag groceries, assist with carry-out, locate products, and keep the store clean and welcoming.

This position requires strong customer service, English fluency, and the ability to work a flexible schedule including afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Friendly, courteous personality with strong customer service skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to learn store product locations and support customers.

• Smile and greet all customers and team members while using Vallarta’s six steps of extraordinary service.

• Bag groceries according to Vallarta’s procedures and customer requests.
• Assist customers with carry-out service and locating products in the store.
• Perform accurate price checks as requested.
• Check and secure items at the bottom of shopping carts when trained.
• Perform 'go-backs,' promptly returning perishable and non-perishable items to shelves.
• Safely gather shopping carts using reflective vest and rope.
• Assist with spills, clean-ups, restroom cleaning, sweeping, mopping, and trash removal (if trained).
• Clean store perimeters, including cart corrals, parking lot, sidewalks, and receiving dock.
• Monitor and report building maintenance needs or safety hazards.
• Keep janitorial room organized and stocked with approved supplies (if trained).
• Always maintain high housekeeping and safety standards.
• Treat coworkers and customers respectfully at all times.
• Abide by all store rules, company policies, and Employee Handbook.
• Report injuries, unsafe conditions, or misconduct to management.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

About the Role

The Courtesy Clerk provides excellent customer service at the check stand by bagging groceries quickly and carefully, assisting customers with carry-out, and helping them locate products. Courtesy Clerks also collect shopping carts, maintain cleanliness in the store and parking lot, and perform custodial duties to keep facilities safe, clean, and welcoming for customers.

What You’ll Do

Physical Requirements

Stand and walk constantly (6-8+ hours/day).

Frequently bend neck/waist, squat, twist, and reach above/below shoulders.

Frequent use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.

Lift and carry up to 25 lbs. frequently, and up to 40 lbs. occasionally (e.g., dog food bags).

Heaviest item required to carry: 40 lbs., up to 40 feet.

Operate manual pallet jacks safely (buddy system required for pallets).

Work near equipment/machinery and on uneven ground.

Exposure to dust, gas, fumes, temperature, and humidity changes.
