Position Summary
A Court Security Officer (CSO) is a specialized security position providing protective services at or around United States Federal Courthouses or other areas as assigned under a contract to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS). CSOs generally provide security services under limited supervision from a Lead CSO and the District Supervisor, who reports to the Contract Manager (CM). This is a union position.

The CSO position involves performing fixed-post, mobile, or foot patrols while maintaining situational awareness, making decisions, and/or taking actions according to established post orders, facility rules, and protocols. Duties may include working in austere conditions for prolonged periods, including inclement weather, while executing walking, standing, searching, surveillance, or sitting duties essential to security functions.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the District's entry and identification system.
  • Test and report emergency equipment.
  • Patrol court facilities and grounds per post orders.
  • Man USMS authorized stationary posts.
  • Provide surveillance on incoming traffic to detect threats before reaching the screening area.
  • May provide armed escort services for judges, court personnel, jurors, and other designated individuals.
  • Secure off-site and remote judicial functions with controlled access and screening.
  • Direct traffic, control lights, and monitor vehicles and pedestrians as per post orders.
  • Occasionally provide courtroom security during hearings.
  • Maintain security presence in courtrooms, enforce federal laws and orders, and handle incident articles.
  • Report unusual occurrences and important events to supervisors.
  • Monitor alarms, radio traffic, and other information sources; dispatch or inform as needed.
  • Respond to fire alarms, burglar alarms, and requests for assistance or criminal acts.
  • Inspect vehicles and pedestrians entering/exiting the facility.
  • Use equipment properly and prevent passage of prohibited articles.
  • Escort individuals or vehicles as per protocols.
  • Maintain necessary licenses, certifications, training, and records.
  • Use communication devices appropriately.
  • Monitor all equipment and report damages immediately.
  • Perform work regardless of weather conditions.
  • Log property and equipment movements.
  • Secure government property, detain personnel if needed, and report unauthorized property removal.
  • Conduct regular patrols and inspections.
  • Issue badges or passes to authorized personnel.
  • Monitor electronic access controls and RFID systems; respond to alarms.
  • Manage access during non-working hours for authorized personnel.
  • Report facility deficiencies and monitor equipment and utility systems.
  • Perform surveillance for unauthorized or inappropriate activity.
  • Support scheduled events and emergencies as needed.
  • Maintain logs and administrative documents.
  • Cooperate with law enforcement, assist with evidence, and testify if required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement experience with general arrest authority within the last 7 years. Must have completed a recognized law enforcement training academy. Must pass background checks, drug tests, and physical exams. Must possess a valid, unrestricted state driver’s license. Fluent in English. Able to meet medical and physical fitness requirements. High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years old.
