Job Summary

Responsible for transporting laboratory specimens, pharmaceuticals, medical records, mail, packages, and other items to appropriate offices, laboratories, and departments following established procedures and under supervision. Ensures safe, timely, and accurate delivery, adhering to protocols for handling biohazardous and time-sensitive materials, including chain of custody and temperature control requirements. Maintains delivery records and communicates effectively with clinical and administrative staff. Escalates issues to supervisor as needed. Follows all organizational safety, infection control, and confidentiality protocols (including HIPAA).

Essential Functions

• Travels to delivery sites on foot or by automobile, following assigned routes and schedules, adjusting routes as needed to accommodate urgent or STAT deliveries as instructed by supervisor, especially for lab specimens.
• Receives, verifies, and transports laboratory specimens, blood products, pharmaceuticals, and other medical items, following standard procedures and supervisor guidance, ensuring proper packaging, labeling, and temperature control.
• Delivers mail, supplies, and packages to physician offices and the mailroom for distribution.
• Prioritizes deliveries based on clinical urgency and communicates with laboratory or clinical staff regarding specimen pick-up and drop-off times.
• Obtains receipts or signatures for delivered articles, maintaining accurate delivery records.
• Documents chain of custody for specimens and other sensitive items as required.
• Services vehicles by checking fluid levels and replenishing fuel.
• Ensures vehicles and transport containers are cleaned and sanitized according to infection control standards.
• Communicates regarding delivery schedules and special handling instructions, escalating issues to supervisor as needed.
• Immediately reports any delays, specimen integrity concerns, or safety incidents to supervisors and relevant departments following established protocols.
• Adheres to all safety, infection control, and confidentiality protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirement: High school diploma or equivalent experience

Experience Requirement: 2-3 years of experience in a healthcare, clinical setting, or a relevant area

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.

Physical Demands

Also involves occasional sitting at a computer workstation, occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling objects over 50 pounds, and some exposure to risk of injury from moving, lifting, or positioning materials; as well as exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes including waste, cuts/punctures, bloodborne or airborne pathogens, temperature extremes, and occasional interaction with combative or violent people.
