Halifax County seeks a County Attorney to serve as chief legal counsel to the Board of Commissioners and County management. The position oversees legal inquiries, prepares and reviews documents, issues opinions, and represents the County in litigation.

The successful candidate will possess a law degree from an accredited school, hold an active North Carolina license to practice law, and meet residency requirements within Halifax County during probation. A driver’s license is required.

Description:

The County Attorney is the chief legal counselor for the County and legal advisor to the County Commissioners, County Manager, and all county offices, departments, agencies and boards. Duties include response to legal inquiries, preparing and reviewing legal documents, rendering legal opinions concerning all areas of county government, and representing the County in litigation. The County Attorney works under the general supervision and direction of the County Manager and is required to take an active role on the County Management Team.

Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of law and extensive experience as a practicing attorney, with substantial experience in local government preferred. Possession of a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina is required. Halifax County requires each department head to reside within the county borders by the completion of their nine-month probationary period.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $116,535 - $189,176. Compensation for this position will be based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Halifax County provides a comprehensive employee benefits package, including membership in the N.C. Local Government Employees’ Retirement System.
