Job description

This position is a grant-funded, on-campus, full-time, 215-day, non-tenure-track appointment based in Champaign, Illinois covered by the Parkland Academic Employees (PAE) collective bargaining unit. Starting salary for 12 months between $59,218.32 - 87,176.99 dependent on certifications, years of teaching experience, and education received.

The Counselor is responsible for assisting students in establishing and achieving their higher education objectives. The main aspect of the job is to meet the mental health needs of current Parkland students. The position involves access to and handling of confidential records and information. The Counselor must be able to work independently and accurately prioritize tasks, while collaborating closely with other members of the department for supervision and clinical consultation. The counselor is expected to comply with the ethics of their profession.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides mental health and career counseling to students.
  • Counsels currently enrolled students on matters relating to the student’s personal well-being and educational objectives.
  • Provides guidance and direction to the general public and prospective students seeking information related to mental health, community resources, and psychoeducation.
  • Conducts workshops and small group discussions on mental health topics, academic issues, and career development.
  • Acts as a reference person for faculty, staff, administrators, and other campus employees who request assistance with students related to mental health, community resources, and reaching academic goals.
  • Administers and interprets career and psychological instruments as needed.
  • Stays abreast of current issues in the profession through involvement in seminars, trainings, continuing education, and organizations.
  • Is involved with various committees of the college.
  • Participates in the planning, compilation, and interpretation of research important to the effectiveness of the Counseling Support Center.
  • Attends meetings and conferences which promote in-service growth.
  • Has a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the college and students, which is approved by the Dean of Counseling Services.
  • Participates in new student orientation activities.
  • Co-supervise the Parkland Peers program and develop processes and procedures with co-supervisor and Dean of Counseling Services.
  • Assists in functions related to the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act, which may include but is not limited to assistance with coordinating partnerships, awareness activities, and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Counseling Services.
  • Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or Family Therapy.
  • Eligible and working towards licensure.
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Technological skills sufficient to navigate internal and external systems.
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
