Job Summary: This is the working level position for a counselor holding the CASAC or equivalent. Requires a medium degree of supervision and may supervise other counselors

Essentials Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities: The following statements reflect the duties considered necessary to describe the essential functionsof the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the workrequirements that may be inherent in this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates group therapy without the necessity of co-leader. Facilitates family programming.
  • Conducts individual therapy sessions and serves as primary therapist. Conducts assessments, evaluations, prepares treatment plans, presents cases in case staffing, and periodically reevaluates client progress and supervises some sessions as assigned.
  • Maintains contact with referral sources and other providers in accordance with New York State and Federal confidentiality regulations. Provides specific information to public groups and inquiries regarding treatment services available.
  • Provide supervision to staff members employed by the unit with the assistance of the Program Supervisor or other CASAC. Maybe required to fill the duties of a Supervising Counselor in his or her absence. Seeks supervision to assure that all incidents are investigated and corrective action taken.
  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical skills appropriate to clinical setting.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric persons. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Must possess the ability to assess data reflective of patient's status. Must interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each client's requirements relative to their age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
  • Takes corrective action when deficiencies occur regarding the provision of Substance Use Disorder Services.

Education Required:

  • College graduate from a program with four-year course study and counseling course work OR other relevant course work beyond the minimum required for New York State Certification and re-certification or Masters of Social Work degree. (preferred)
  • Associates degree and licensed/certification: Certified Alcoholism and Substance abuse Counselor who has a current valid credential as issued by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services in accordance with paragraphs 19.07 (a) and (20) of the Mental Hygiene Law
  • Other qualified health professionals as defined by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services in 14 NYCRR, part 372.

Experience Required:

  • Two (2) years paid experience in Chemical Dependency Counseling.

  • Follows established department and organization policies, procedures, objectives, quality management, safety, environmental and infection control. Demonstrates understanding of behaviors consistent with the facilities Mission, Vision, Goals and Values. Recognizes the importance of customer satisfaction. Develops appropriate behaviors and attitudes regarding exceeding customer expectations.
  • Works to promote cooperative staff effort to provide and maintain high quality service to patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel to assure quality patient care. Courteously responds to inquiries from same.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and safe work environment.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
