Job summary

YWCA of Hawai'i Island is seeking a Counselor to provide trauma-informed therapeutic services in Kailua, HI. This role supports survivors of sexual assault through individual, family, and group counseling. Job description

Position Overview

The Counselor provides trauma-informed therapeutic services to survivors of sexual assault and their families, supporting both emotional and physical well-being. This role functions within a coordinated system of care to reduce the impact of trauma, support healing, and increase community awareness and prevention.

The Counselor may provide individual, family, and group therapy, and may also support program development, supervision, and consultation to crisis response staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling services to survivors and their families
  • Deliver trauma-informed, client-centered care that supports healing and resilience
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records and documentation
  • Participate in case coordination, team meetings, and program planning
  • Provide consultation and support to crisis response staff as needed, including on-call rotation
  • May assist in supervising and training interns or staff
  • Support community outreach, education, and prevention efforts
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and all confidentiality standards
  • Attend required trainings and staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Schedule & Work Conditions
  • Exempt position (0.5 – 1.0 FTE)
  • Generally Monday‑Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Some evening, weekend, and on‑call hours required
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a clinical field such as social work, psychology, counseling, nursing, or related area
  • Licensure in the State of Hawai‘i required if applicable to degree (must be in good standing)
  • Minimum six (6) months experience providing therapy to children and/or adults
  • Experience with trauma, crisis intervention, or sexual assault services preferred
Additional Requirements
  • Valid Hawai‘i driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel
  • Clean driving abstract and current automobile insurance (minimum required coverage)
  • Ability to pass background check and pre‑employment drug screening
  • Must not have a history of interpersonal violence or disqualifying criminal convictions
  • If not currently licensed, ability and willingness to obtain licensure within 18 months is preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment and counseling skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive and emotionally complex situations with professionalism and care
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
