Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Counsel - Employee Benefits Division based in United States.

This remote legal and compliance role provides strategic guidance across a growing portfolio of employee benefits and insurance products.

You will serve as a trusted advisor on statutory Paid Family & Medical Leave, disability, life, AD&D, dental, and supplemental health offerings.

The position combines legal research, regulatory analysis, product support, risk assessment, and practical business counseling.

You will collaborate closely with Product, Operations, Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial, Distribution, Marketing, and other legal and compliance teams.

Your work will help ensure products and business processes remain aligned with evolving state and federal requirements.

The role is ideal for a proactive attorney who can translate complex regulations into clear, actionable guidance in a highly regulated environment.

You will also have opportunities to influence strategic initiatives, strengthen compliance programs, and develop subject-matter expertise in employee benefits.

Accountabilities
  • Monitor, research, interpret, and assess state and federal laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance affecting Paid Family & Medical Leave, disability, and other employee benefits products.
  • Provide practical legal and compliance guidance to stakeholders on product development, operations, claims, distribution, implementation, and related business activities.
  • Support the development, launch, administration, and ongoing compliance of employee benefits and group insurance products.
  • Review policy forms, certificates, riders, marketing and training materials, and business processes to identify and address regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regulatory research and support insurance department filings, reporting obligations, regulatory inquiries, examinations, complaints, claim appeals, arbitrations, and other regulatory matters.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify compliance risks, evaluate regulatory implications, and develop practical solutions that support business objectives.
  • Represent Compliance on cross-functional projects, strategic initiatives, and product development efforts.
  • Develop and deliver training, educational resources, and guidance on regulatory requirements and emerging compliance issues.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments through relevant industry and trade organizations and communicate impact assessments and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Support the development and maintenance of compliance policies, procedures, controls, and governance frameworks that promote effective regulatory risk management.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Approximately five years of relevant professional experience or equivalent experience.
  • Strong legal research, regulatory analysis, issue-spotting, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical business recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and build trusted relationships across business and legal teams.
  • Ability to quickly develop expertise in new and evolving subject areas while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Preferred experience supporting employee benefits products, including statutory Paid Family & Medical Leave, disability insurance, group insurance, leave management, accident and health insurance, or related products.
  • Preferred insurance industry experience, particularly with an insurance carrier or law firm focused on insurance regulatory matters; insurance litigation experience alone may not be sufficient.
  • Preferred experience interpreting and applying state and federal insurance laws and regulations and providing regulatory, compliance, or legal guidance for insurance products and operations.
Benefits
  • Targeted base salary of $145,000--$180,000 per year, with actual compensation varying based on location, skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
  • Eligibility for additional annual incentive compensation based on individual and organizational performance.
  • Remote work environment.

  • Mental health benefits and employee assistance program.
  • Paid time off and other paid time-away benefits.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short-term disability coverage.
  • Cultural observance day.
