Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school required.
• Licensed to practice law required.
• Professional privacy designation (e.g. CIPP/US) preferred.
• 10+ years of legal experience with a law firm, insurer, or similar organization.
• Experience structuring and negotiating business transactions.
• Experience drafting and interpreting complex contracts; reinsurance familiarity preferred.
• Knowledge of privacy laws, data security, and health law regulations.

Job description

Position Overview

The Associate General Counsel is a senior legal advisor who delivers practical, results-driven counsel across the enterprise. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role drives outcomes across insurance law, contract negotiation, reinsurance, privacy and data security, health law with an emphasis on supplemental health products, professional liability claims, litigation management, and regulatory compliance, supporting both ongoing operations and new business initiatives.

Essential Elements

• Executive Counsel. Serve as a trusted legal advisor to senior management and employees on contract and other legal matters impacting company operations. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on the design and implementation of new business initiatives, providing proactive thought leadership and strategic guidance. Support and advance key projects, transactions, and day-to-day business activities while engaging directly with clients, business partners, and senior-level stakeholders.
• Contract Negotiation. Lead the negotiation and drafting of a wide variety of contracts and reinsurance treaties, both with affiliated entities and with external parties, including domestic and foreign reinsurers. Ensure all agreements are commercially sound, legally compliant, and aligned with the Company's risk tolerance and business objectives.
• Privacy, Security, and AI Governance. Partner with the Company's designated Privacy Officer and Chief Information Security Officer to maintain and enhance privacy policies and procedures. Advise on federal and state privacy laws and regulations, data use, information security, breach response, artificial intelligence governance, and digital responsibility. Monitor legal and regulatory developments and translate requirements into practical guidance that protects internal operations, customers, and business partners.
• Health Law and Supplemental Health Products. Provide legal counsel on health law and regulatory requirements affecting supplemental health products such as limited benefit, accident indemnity, hospital indemnity, critical illness, life and disability. Partner with business, product, compliance, and operations teams on product development, administration, distribution, and related initiatives, identifying and mitigating legal risks and supporting compliant business solutions.
• Professional Liability Claims and Litigation Management. Advise on professional liability (errors and omissions) and cyber liability claims and oversee litigation and dispute matters from initial assessment through resolution. Develop case strategy, manage outside counsel, monitor budgets and performance, coordinate discovery and internal stakeholders, evaluate exposure, and support effective reporting, settlement, and risk-mitigation decisions.

Requirements

Education and Certifications

• Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school required
• Licensed to practice law required
• Professional privacy designation (e.g. CIPP/US) preferred

Experience

• 10+ years of legal experience with a law firm, insurance or reinsurance organization, or other similar organization required
• Experience structuring and negotiating business transactions required
• Experience drafting and interpreting complex corporate contracts and agreements; experience with reinsurance agreements, insurance agency contracts, and other insurance documents preferred
• Knowledge of federal and state privacy laws and regulations, data security requirements, and privacy compliance practices required
• Knowledge of health law and regulatory requirements applicable to supplemental health products required
• Experience managing professional liability claims, litigation, outside counsel, discovery, case strategy, and legal spend required

Recent Experience In a Strong Customer-centric Environment Preferred

• Background in life, health, casualty, and liability insurance products preferred
• Knowledge and expertise regarding the Affordable Care Act or Blue Cross Blue Shield system preferred

Compensation And Benefits

The target base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is
$200,000
Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401k and wellness benefits beginning on the first day of the month following the first day of employment.
