The Cost Accountant at CPS Inc. is responsible for analyzing and reporting manufacturing costs, maintaining accurate inventory and cost accounting records, and supporting the month-end close process.

This role will monitor product costs, investigate manufacturing variances, and provide financial analysis to support operational and business decisions, working with Operations, Supply Chain, Production, Engineering, and Finance to ensure accurate costing and financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly cost accounting activities, including inventory valuation, standard cost updates, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Maintain and analyze standard costs for raw materials, labor, overhead, and finished goods.
  • Analyze variances and communicate key drivers to management.
  • Prepare monthly cost and variance reports and provide explanations for fluctuations.
  • Partner with Operations and Production to understand manufacturing performance and variances.
  • Monitor inventory balances and ensure accurate valuation per US GAAP and company policies.
  • Reconcile inventory subledgers to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist with BOMs, routings, labor and overhead rates; support budgeting and forecasting.

Summary

The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing and reporting manufacturing costs, maintaining accurate inventory and cost accounting records, and supporting the month‑end close process. This role will monitor product costs, investigate manufacturing variances, and provide financial analysis and insights to support operational and business decisions. The Cost Accountant will work closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Production, Engineering, and Finance teams to ensure accurate costing, inventory valuation, and financial reporting while identifying opportunities to improve profitability and operational efficiency.

Essential Functions
  • Perform monthly cost accounting activities, including inventory valuation, standard cost updates, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Maintain and analyze standard costs for raw materials, labor, overhead, and finished goods.
  • Analyze material, labor, overhead, purchase price, production, and inventory variances and communicate key drivers to management.
  • Prepare monthly cost and variance reports and provide explanations for significant fluctuations.
  • Partner with Operations and Production teams to understand manufacturing performance, production costs, and operational variances.
  • Monitor inventory balances and ensure accurate valuation in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Reconcile inventory subledgers to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies.
  • Analyze inventory movements, adjustments, scrap, obsolescence, and reserves.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of bills of materials, routings, labor rates, and overhead rates.
  • Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including manufacturing cost and inventory assumptions.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reporting.
  • Perform gross margin and profitability analysis by product, customer, business unit, or production line.
  • Monitor manufacturing costs and identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for cost reduction.
  • Assist with physical inventory counts and cycle count programs and investigate inventory discrepancies.
  • Support the month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of cost accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Participate in ERP implementations, system enhancements, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide financial analysis and ad hoc reporting to Finance and Operations leadership.
