Job description

An established process-manufacturing company in the East Houston/Pasadena area is seeking an experienced Cost Accountant. This position will play an important role in product costing, inventory valuation, manufacturing variance analysis, forecasting, and operational decision support.

This is more than a traditional month-end accounting role. The Cost Accountant will collaborate directly with plant operations, procurement, supply chain, and company leadership to improve cost visibility, identify operational trends, and strengthen profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and analyze product costs, standard costs, and manufacturing cost data.
  • Review material, labor, overhead, production, usage, yield, and purchase-price variances.
  • Investigate significant cost variances and communicate findings to accounting and operations leadership.
  • Support inventory valuation for raw materials, work in process, and finished goods.
  • Review inventory adjustments, cycle-count results, scrap, waste, and obsolete inventory.
  • Maintain costing information, bills of material, routings, and related master data within SAP.
  • Perform cost rollups and assist with periodic standard-cost updates.
  • Analyze product margins, manufacturing expenses, and cost-of-goods-sold trends.
  • Support month-end close through journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial analysis.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and operational planning.
  • Partner with production, procurement, and supply-chain teams to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Develop reports and analyses that improve cost visibility and support business decisions.
  • Support internal and external audits involving inventory, manufacturing costs, and financial controls.
  • Recommend improvements to costing procedures, reporting, internal controls, and operational workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Professional experience in cost accounting, plant accounting, manufacturing accounting, or a closely related position.
  • Hands-on experience with product costing, standard costing, and manufacturing variance analysis.
  • Experience with inventory accounting and valuation, including raw materials, work in process, and finished goods.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial, chemical, or process-manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
  • Ability to investigate financial and operational data and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with accounting, operations, procurement, supply chain, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using SAP, including SAP CO, SAP FI/CO, or SAP S/4HANA.
  • Experience maintaining bills of material, routings, cost centers, or costing master data.
  • Experience analyzing purchase-price, material, labor, overhead, usage, yield, and production variances.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau, Power Query, or similar reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting annual standard-cost updates or cost rollups.
  • CPA, CMA, or progress toward a professional accounting certification.
  • Experience in chemical, fertilizer, food, energy, petrochemical, or another process-manufacturing industry.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will:

  • Produce accurate and timely product-cost and inventory information.
  • Explain the operational factors driving manufacturing variances.
  • Develop strong working relationships with plant and business teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve margins, controls, and operating efficiency.
  • Maintain reliable costing information within SAP and related systems.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Join an established process-manufacturing organization.
  • Work closely with operations and leadership rather than being limited to transactional accounting.
  • Influence product costing, operational efficiency, and profitability.
  • Gain broad exposure to manufacturing finance, inventory, procurement, and supply-chain operations.
  • Contribute to meaningful process and reporting improvements.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply with a current resume outlining their cost-accounting, manufacturing, inventory, variance-analysis, and SAP experience.
