Job summary

The CosmicAI program at the NRAO on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville seeks a postdoctoral fellow to launch a new AI-focused research program analyzing astronomical data. The fellow will split time 50/50 between Observable Universe Working Group research and independent projects, focusing on anomaly detection for data calibration and hyperspectral cube image segmentation.

The appointment is initially for two years with a possible third year, with access to top-tier HPC

Qualifications

• PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, Data Science, or related field.
• Experience in data science, data reduction and analysis, radio astronomy, and/or software development.
• Established record of independent research.
• Research expertise in interferometric radio/millimeter/submillimeter astronomy.
• Proficiency working with a geographically distributed, multi-disciplinary team.
• Experience with CASA.
• Experience with modern machine learning / deep learning techniques and software packages.
• Experience with high-performance or high-throughput computing (HPC/HTC).
• Experience with high-dimensional data.
• Fluency in English; strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead a postdoctoral research program advancing AI for astronomical data.
• Contribute to anomaly detection for data calibration and hyperspectral cube segmentation.
• Collaborate with CosmicAI team across sites and with NRAO/UVA.
• Publish independent research results.
