The Cosmetology/Barber Inspector I is responsible for conducting inspections of licensed establishments, schools, and individuals to ensure compliance with the rules, regulations, and standards set forth by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology & Barbering. This position involves performing routine inspections, investigating complaints, and providing education on regulatory requirements to licensees and the public. The inspector plays a key role in safeguarding public health and safety by enforcing sanitation and professional standards within the cosmetology and barbering industry.
Conducts inspections of licensed salons, barber shops, schools, and other establishments to ensure compliance with state laws, rules, and regulations.
Investigates complaints related to unsanitary conditions, unlicensed activity, or other violations of cosmetology and barbering regulations.
Educates licensees, students, and the public on health, safety, and sanitation standards as well as licensing requirements.
Issues notices of violation and provides guidance on corrective actions when non-compliance is identified.
Prepares detailed inspection reports and maintains accurate records of findings and enforcement actions.
Collects evidence and provides testimony in administrative hearings or legal proceedings, as needed.
Assists with administering examinations to determine qualifications to practice cosmetology or barbering; may conduct written and practical tests to evaluate knowledge and skills concerning cosmetology or barber tasks and procedures.
Travels within an assigned region to conduct inspections and attend training or agency meetings.
Performs other related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering.
Positions in this job family conduct independent inspections and investigations of cosmetology and barber establishments to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations. Inspectors also administer practical and written licensure examinations, evaluate technical skills, and oversee testing procedures. They investigate complaints, educate licensees on regulations, and identify illegal products or practices. Work is performed with some independence, with complex cases requiring supervisory consultation. Frequent travel within the assigned region is required.
At least three (3) years of experience as a licensee in the practice of cosmetology or barbering and current dual licensure of both cosmetology and barbering Master Instructor’s licenses are required.
This position requires knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations governing the practice of cosmetology and barbering, as well as inspection, investigation, and interview procedures. A strong understanding of test administration, security protocols, and the evaluation of cosmetology and barbering skills is essential. The ability to effectively plan and conduct inspections, investigations, and interviews to ensure regulatory compliance is necessary, along with strong analytical skills to assess information and make informed decisions. The role also requires the ability to clearly organize and present findings, educate licensees, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Proficiency in performing cosmetology and barbering tasks, as well as building and maintaining positive working relationships, is crucial for success in this position.
A current dual licensure of both cosmetology and barbering Master Instructor’s licenses are required.
