Job summary

Black Hills Energy is seeking a Corrosion Technician in Cheyenne, WY to support safe, reliable operations of natural gas pipelines. Responsibilities include corrosion testing, inspections, data analysis, and CP system maintenance. Must travel up to 50% and work in various weather conditions.

Position summary:

The Corrosion Technician supports the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of natural gas pipeline systems by performing corrosion control testing, inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and installation of cathodic protection and related corrosion prevention equipment. This role requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively, follow established procedures, adapt to specialized tools, new software, and changing regulatory requirements, and perform field duties in all weather conditions.

Pay Range:

This posting includes the full pay range for this position. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.

• Level I: $32.36 - $48.41 per hour
• Senior: $35.58 - $53.49 per hour

Essential Functions:

• Perform corrosion control tests, inspections, surveys, and measurements on pipeline facilities to ensure compliance with company procedures, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Analyze corrosion and cathodic protection data, identify abnormalities, and recommend or implement corrective actions.
• Prepare, maintain, and submit accurate compliance records, technical reports, surveys, action plans, and related documentation to meet required timelines and compliance obligations.
• Install, operate, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and evaluate cathodic protection systems and related corrosion control facilities, including rectifiers, test stations, anodes, ground beds, and monitoring equipment.
• Identify, report, and help correct safety, environmental, operational, and corrosion related concerns while performing work in accordance with company standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor pipeline condition through cathodic protection surveys, internal corrosion monitoring, atmospheric corrosion inspections, coating evaluations, exposed pipe inspections, and other approved assessment methods.
• Assist with corrosion control projects, regulatory inspections, audits, compliance reviews, and status reviews, including cost estimates, drawings, specifications, material needs, contractor coordination, construction oversight, and closeout documentation.
• Provide technical support, guidance, and field training to employees and contractors, and perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Work autonomously under minimal supervision. Working and driving outside in extreme weather conditions is common along with providing emergency response after regular business hours, necessitating the carrying of a company cell phone.
• Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of employees and company assets, contractors, and the general public.
• Deal with and speak to, both in person and by telephone, with a wide variety of people using tact, courtesy, and professionalism.

What Is Required:

All Levels:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
• Required to achieve and maintain operations qualifications, certifications, and company required training needed to perform assigned job duties.
• Must have a working knowledge in the use of common software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Candidates should also possess the ability to troubleshoot basic computer issues and have the capacity to learn new software and technologies as needed.
• Must be a self-starter capable of working independently in solitary environments as well as collaboratively within a team. Candidates should be able to take directions from supervisors, adhere to job schedules, maintain attention to detail, and follow established work rules.
• Complete record keeping associated with corrosion compliance activities to ensure that work done is accounted for properly and accurately to be maintained for future reference.
• Basic knowledge and willingness to fully learn principles of corrosion and remediation of steel pipe needs for the different types of corrosion.
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals).
• Ability to perform a range of physical tasks, including but not limited to, sitting, standing, driving, bending or stooping, squatting or crouching, reaching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting up to lbs, and typing.
• This role will be required to travel up to 50% of the time
• This position requires driving responsibilities. You must hold and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company and insurer standards.

Level I Requirements:

• Attend Rectifier Training within first 6 months of employment
• Minimum of 2 years of corrosion, pipeline, natural gas system, or related field experience.

Senior Requirements:

• Minimum of 4 years of corrosion, pipeline, natural gas system, or related field experience.
• NACE Certification
• Mastery of applicable CP data management program

What Is Desired:

• Associate's Degree in Applied Science, a two-year technical degree, or equivalent related technical training and experience.
• NACE or AMPP Cathodic Protection certification
• Experience independently evaluating corrosion control data, identifying abnormal conditions, recommending corrective actions, and supporting pipeline integrity or remediation activities.
• Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems, DOT regulations, 49 CFR Part 192 Subpart I, company procedures, cathodic protection equipment, corrosion inspections, pipeline coatings, maps, drawings, and CP facility installation or maintenance.
