THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections seeks a Corrections (DOC) Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor who is ready to use trade experience to teach others in a secure correctional environment. This role at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy gives you the opportunity to guide inmates as they build confidence, discipline, and practical skills that support positive change. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position guides and supervises inmates in both classroom and hands‑on instruction in the refrigeration mechanic trade. The role supports facility operations while building vocational skills and strong work practices. As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

• Training Delivery: Teach refrigeration mechanic practices, methods, and procedures
• Work Crew Oversight: Direct inmate work crews, assign tasks, and inspect completed projects
• Material Control: Issue, inventory, and account for tools and materials
• Project Planning: Determine required supplies, submit purchase requests, and plan daily schedules
• Instruction Adjustment: Select instructional methods based on project needs, ability levels, and learning progress
• Documentation Management: Maintain training records, attendance lists, and assignment details

WORK SCHEDULE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
• Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
• Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:

• You must possess an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.

Other Requirements:

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
