THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Corrections Officer Trainee participates in formal training sessions and on-the-job assignments to develop skills and techniques in the custody and supervision of inmates in a state correctional facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a corrections officer. Responsibilities include:

• Contact with inmates and visitors.
• Maintaining security in various areas of the facility by monitoring inmate activities.
• Observing inmates and behavior, making rounds, head counts, and security checks.
• Working a 40-hour week with shifts to be determined, including weekends and holidays, with possible overtime and work under adverse weather conditions.
• Participating in formal instruction on sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, and custodial responsibilities.
• Assisting inmates with their adjustment and participation in correctional processes.
• Preparing written reports and responding to emergencies.
• Uniforms are provided. This is a full-time union position with comprehensive benefits.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications include:

• PA residency requirement waived for this title.
• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.

Legal requirements:

• Background investigation and CJIS compliance.
• Medical examination, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.
