Job summary

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is seeking correction/jail officers to ensure care, custody and control of inmates in accordance with department policies. Officers will tour assigned areas, monitor activity, identify problems, and perform security duties to prevent escapes, disturbances, and harm to inmates and staff.

Necessitates reporting, restraint use, and response to emergencies. Officers must work various shifts, maintain logs, conduct searches, and cooperate with supervisors.

Qualifications

• Must meet department standards of conduct and able to obtain security clearances.

Responsibilities

• Work any established shift and maintain regular, punctual attendance.
• Patrol assigned areas, observe inmate activity, and enforce policy.
• Search inmates, cells, and areas for contraband and ensure security.
• Monitor inmate counts, log entries, and prepare accurate written reports.
• Open/close doors, cells, and gates manually or electronically.
• Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with staff and inmates.
• Employ restraints and participate in restraining and self-defense techniques as required.
• Respond to emergencies and work overtime as needed.
