Job summary

NYC Department of Correction seeks a Correction Officer to supervise and care for inmates within NYC facilities. You will supervise visits, meals, and programs; inspect areas for safety; conduct contraband searches; document logs; coordinate with other officers; and respond to incidents.

Starting salary is $56,838 with substantial overtime potential and excellent benefits, including a pension. Shifts include nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise visits, recreational programs, meals, and other activities for people in custody.
  • Inspect areas for safety and security threats; conduct contraband searches.
  • Complete forms and logs; communicate with fellow officers; issue verbal orders and explanations.
  • Observe people in custody and refer individuals for medical/psychiatric evaluation when needed.
  • Escort individuals in custody within and outside facilities; operate departmental vehicles.
  • Respond to incidents and enforce department guidelines.

Job description

Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained people in custody within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise visits, recreational programs, meals and other congregate activities for people in custody; inspect assigned areas for conditions that threaten safety and security; conduct contraband searches; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to people in custody; observe people in custody and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; safeguard Department supplies and equipment; escort people in custody within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles; respond to unusual incidents and disturbances; enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines; request medical assistance for people in custody when necessary; count and verify the number of people in custody present in assigned areas; verify identification of people in custody; supervise people in custody of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Special Working Conditions: Correction Officers will be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Some of the physical activities performed by Correction Officers and environmental conditions experienced are: walking and/or standing in an assigned area for 8 ½ to 17 hours continuously; walking up several flights of stairs; working outdoors in all kinds of weather; exposure to chemical agents; being subjected to close contact with people in custody; possible physical restraint of people in custody; interactions with different categories or classifications of people in custody e.g., people in custody under mental health observation; responding to various incidents as required; carrying or donning heavy equipment; lifting/moving heavy objects. Starting salary: $56,838, with significant earning potential.

  • After 5.5 years, top base salary is $109,352
  • Paid overtime opportunities:
  • More than 50% of officers hired in 2023 made an additional $30K in overtime pay in their first year.
  • More than 25% of officers hired in 2023 made an additional $40K in overtime pay in their first year.

Pension; retire with pay and benefits for life in 22 years (at any age).

Opportunities for overtime pay. Paid sick days. Annual uniform allowance of $1,100; contributions by the City to Welfare and Annuity Funds and City-paid health insurance; after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service, incumbents receive $4,799, $5,799, $6,799 and $9,314, respectively, in addition to base salary as well as longevity. All rates are subject to change.

Age Requirements: Applicants must be 21+ by appointment date; age is otherwise unrestricted.
