Job summary

Clayton County is seeking a Corrections Officer I to maintain security and order within the facility. Under supervision, you will perform inmate supervision, counts, searches, and monitor alarms and cameras. You will also transport inmates, supervise visits, and enforce rules to ensure safety.

Qualified applicants have a High School Diploma or GED, a valid Georgia driver's license, and must be 21. Preference given to applicants with law enforcement or security experience and the ability to pass

Responsibilities

  • Oversees security of inmates inside and outside of the facility; conducts counts, inspections, and searches; monitors movement and alarms.
  • Transports inmates to job sites; logs in/out; relays times; assigns tools; conducts inventory and searches of equipment.
  • Supervises inmates during showers, meals, recreation; issues medication; ensures cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Supervises inmate visitation; verifies IDs; searches visitors.
  • Controls inmate behavior; investigates suspicious activity; uses restraints as necessary; prepares reports.
  • Answers phones; directs calls; monitors radio traffic; maintains records and forms.
  • Familiar with emergency procedures; coordinates with outside agencies when needed.
  • Operates building equipment; locks and unlocks doors.
  • Sorts mail; assists with store purchases; escorts for vendors and delivery personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER I

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Corrections Officer I

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
Prepares for and attends Basic Corrections Officer Training. If employed at the facility before attendance, the officer will perform essential duties below under close supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

All tasks are performed under supervision of certified staff.

  • Oversees security of inmates inside and outside of corrections facility; conducts inmate counts, visual inspections, and searches of inmates and inmates’ property; monitors inmate movement and dorm activity; monitor alarms, cameras and other security equipment of the facility; conducts security checks throughout building, storage areas, fence line and perimeter.
  • Transports inmates to job sites; logs inmates in and out; relays arrival and departure time to office; assigns tools to inmates; conducts inventory and inspections of tools and equipment; searches vehicles.
  • Supervises inmates during showers, haircuts, meal times and preparation, clean up, recreation activities, etc.; issues medication to inmates; ensures all equipment and facility is clean and sanitary.
  • Supervises inmate visitation; verifies identification of visitors; searches visitors.
  • Controls inmate behavior; investigates suspicious activities of inmates; control disturbances and maintains order; identifies security threat groups; uses restraints and force as necessary; prepares performance reports on inmates.
  • Answers the telephone; directs and monitors phone calls; monitors and responds to radio traffic; maintains records; prepares various forms, logs and reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of emergency operations procedures; contacts outside agencies for support in cases of emergency.
  • Operates building equipment; locks and unlocks doors.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Sorts and passes out mail; inventories and passes out store purchases; provides escorts for vendors, repair persons, and delivery persons.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must be 21 years of age. Preference will be given to applicants with some combination of the following: previous law enforcement experience, honorable military service, security, managing an incarcerated caseload, parole, probation, experience in supervising people in out-of-office environments, and mechanical or technical ability. Must be eligible for and able to pass the State of Georgia Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Entrance Exam before process begins.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to temperature/weather extremes, strong odors, toxic/poisonous agents, disease/blood./bodily fluids, violence, noise extremes, and traffic hazards.
