Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent and the direct supervision of the Sergeant or Corporal is continuously responsible to provide care, custody and control of inmates for Carroll County Department of Corrections in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent and the direct supervision of the Sergeant or Corporal is continuously responsible to provide care, custody and control of inmates for Carroll County Department of Corrections in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:*

  • Supervise all inmate activities to ensure a safe and secure environment both inside and outside the Department facilities.
  • Process incoming inmates, completes intake paperwork, issues clothing and toilet articles, takes fingerprints and identification photos, and advises inmates on correctional facility rules and regulations.
  • Maintains Control Room logs.
  • Answers the phone and receives visitors.
  • Inspects cells, dayrooms, kitchen, dining room, visiting room, and other areas for security breaches.
  • Transports inmates inside and outside the facility.
  • Conducts inmate counts.
  • Maintains inmate order, discipline, safety and security.
  • Supervises inmate programs as requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the primary functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the primary functions of the job.

Ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of correctional facility policies and procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with administrative staff, sergeants, correctional personnel, inmates and their families, and the general public.

Ability to plan and perform diversified duties requiring judgment in the analysis of situations, adapting standard procedures to meet different conditions, and making decisions based on precedent and policy.

Ability to express or exchange ideas verbally and in writing.

Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

Ability to prepare written materials and analyze data.

Ability to exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move individuals or objects.

Ability to pass the physical agility test required of correctional officers.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

Duties require a high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of correctional experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience, in which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

LICENSURE

Certified Correctional Officer by the New Hampshire Association of Counties or another Correctional Certification Authority or ability to be certified upon hire.
