Job summary

State of West Virginia is seeking a lead worker to oversee a state shop, kitchen, post office, laundry, or central receiving unit under general supervision. The role may direct other staff, prepare reports, train coworkers, and manage materials inventory.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs full performance duties as a lead worker overseeing the activities of state shop, kitchen, post office, laundry, or central receiving. This position may direct the work of employees and/or inmate work crews in the applicable areas of assignment, prepare reports, and train co-workers in proper work methods. May be responsible for the acquisition and inventory control of all materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for the assigned areas of operations. Will perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.


Experience: Four years of full-time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in the area of assignment, one year of which must have been in a lead worker capacity.


Substitution: Coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis for up to four years of experience.

Supervisor - Formally delegated responsibility for planning, assigning, reviewing and approving the work of two (2) or more full‑time or part‑time equivalent employees. The supervisor's overall role is to communicate organizational needs, oversee employees' performance, provide guidance, support, identify development needs, and manage the reciprocal relationship between staff and the organization so that each is successful. Temporary employees are not included for purposes of this definition. How do you qualify for this job title? Please note that this question is only asking how you meet the minimum qualifications. You will be asked about your overall/total training and experience in the next question.


Qualification Scenarios


  • I have graduation from high school (or the equivalent) *AND* at least four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid work experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead worker or supervisor capacity.

  • I have a Bachelor’s degree (or at least 120 semester hours) from an accredited college or university.

  • I have a combination of college semester hours *AND* full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid work experience to equal a total of at least four (4) years. College semester hours can substitute for the qualifying paid work experience at the rate of thirty (30) semester hours = one (1) year of paid work experience. Please note that if you select this option to qualify, you MUST have at least one (1) year of paid lead worker and/or supervisory experience *OR* at least thirty (30) semester hours to substitute for this experience.
