Job summary

Osceola County Government is seeking a Corrections Classification Specialist to assess and classify inmates housed for more than 48 hours, guiding housing placement and facilitating self-help, educational and vocational programs. The role involves counseling inmates and coordinating with security staff to ensure safe, compliant operations.

The position supports adjustment to jail life, oversees program eligibility, and maintains critical records.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or closely related field.
• 1 year of experience in criminal justice, corrections, and/or social work; equivalent education or training considered.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Classify inmates according to applicable rules, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor custody, housing, and program placements; reclassify inmates as needed.
• Coordinate with Security Staff to advise on housing and placement issues.
• Respond to inmate requests and grievances regarding housing and placement.
• Screen, determine eligibility, and assign inmates as trustee workers.
• Handle telephone inquiries; direct to appropriate person or department.
• Provide assistance and counseling to inmates for adjustment to jail life and personal issues.
• Perform administrative support tasks: data analysis, typing, reports processing, verification.
• Conduct counseling interviews and address inmate interests and concerns.
• Coordinate education and work schedules for inmate programs; assist in community re-entry planning.
• Assist inmates to obtain legal documentation from research liaison.
• Calculate jail sentences and apply gain time to determine release dates.
• Serve as liaison to other facility departments for information dissemination.
• Attend meetings on classification issues and safety.
• Maintain records and filing systems; generate legal records and reports.
• Maintain daily calendars for next day releases and inmate movement.
