Job summary

The State of Ohio’s Rehabilitation & Correction - Southeast Correctional Institution is hiring a Correctional Workshop Specialist to supervise OPI workshop operations and inmate workers, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliant production. You will train staff, monitor quality, and maintain inventory while recording data in the ERP system.

Applicants should be prepared to manage security duties, assist with payroll, and participate in ongoing ACA-related activities.

Qualifications

  • Formal arithmetic education including fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • 18 months job training or 18 months experience directing a work crew.
  • 18 months training or experience in employee training & development.
  • Asbestos AHERA course options for applicable roles.
  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees incarcerated workers in the OPI workshop and service delivery.
  • Provides security and custody of incarcerated individuals.
  • Trains inmates in work methods, equipment operation and safety.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment and tools with daily records.
  • Assigns and reviews work; schedules and evaluates performance.
  • Ensures product quality and prepares workshop records and reports.
  • Inputs data into ERP system; maintains maintenance schedules.
  • Oversees workshop maintenance and transport of inmates.
  • Manages shipping, receiving, storage and inventory control.
  • Prepares daily/month-end payroll and performance evaluations.
  • Attends trainings; works on special projects and ACA files.

Job Description
What You’ll Do

Requires considerable knowledge of correctional workshop operating policies and procedures of the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) shop

  • Oversees work of incarcerated individuals assigned to the OPI workshop and/or engaged in service delivery
  • Provides security and custody of incarcerated individuals
  • Trains incarcerated individuals in proper work methods, equipment operation and/or safety practices in the assigned area
  • Enforces institution rules and regulations
  • Maintains control of supplies, equipment, and tools (e.g., issues and records daily tool and chemical usage, inventory supplies)
  • Assigns and reviews work (e.g., schedules incarcerated individuals; monitors and evaluates work performed and completes quality control check)
  • Ensures quality control specifications of products
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports of workshop activities
  • Inputs data into manufacturing system as assigned, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
  • Oversees equipment maintenance (e.g., schedules routine and preventative maintenance) and/or workshop cleaning
  • Escorts and/or transports incarcerated individuals
  • Oversees shipping, receiving, storage and/or inventory of products and materials
  • Prepares and submits reports
  • Completes daily and month-end inmate payroll, month-end Earned Credit report, inmate performance evaluations (e.g., annual and special), and weekly inspection report.
  • Performs other related duties and security functions
  • Attends in-service trainings
  • Works on special projects and committees
  • Assists with ACA (e.g., institutional and OPI) files
  • May be utilized in any other OPI shop due to staff shortage and/or extenuating circumstances
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Pre-Employment Drug Testing

All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. Testing will also be performed for the presence of marijuana. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment unless the applicant submits medical documentation of legally prescribed medications or a recommendation for medical marijuana.
