Job summary

Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work, one year of which must have been as a correctional officer in a juvenile or adult community/institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • One year of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work; and a combination of education and experience where thirty semester hours of coursework in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of experience.
  • Eighteen months of full-time work experience as a counselor of offenders in a community/institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • A combination of eighteen months of education and full-time experience where thirty semester hours of coursework equal one year of experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes specific correctional roles.

Responsibilities

  • Shift Supervision & Security: Supervise employees during assigned shifts, visit all living/working units, document rounds, assign searches, ensure orderly operations.
  • Staff Management & Development: Identify training needs for Correctional Officers, provide coaching, assist with training sessions and orientation.
  • Administrative & HR Duties: Maintain CO work time, approve/deny leave, complete work schedules, write performance evaluations.
  • Documentation & Investigations: Complete staff investigations, maintain daily logs, and update the ICON system.

Job description

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women is a multi-faceted facility that serves as the sole female facility and female reception center for the Iowa Department of Corrections.

Schedule:
  • - Shift: Afternoon shift (1:00 PM – 11:00 PM)
  • - Rotation: 6 days on/4 days off, 5 days on/5 days off, 5 days on/3 days off
Key Responsibilities:
  • Shift Supervision & Security: Supervise employees during assigned shifts. Visit all staffed areas and living/working units for incarcerated individuals once per shift, documenting rounds using a PDA. Assign area and personal offender searches. Ensure the overall orderly operations of the institution.
  • Staff Management & Development: Identify training and developmental needs for Correctional Officers (COs), providing necessary coaching to improve job performance. Assist with training sessions and orientation as designated.
  • Administrative & HR Duties: Maintain, approve, and deny CO work time and leave requests within the WorkDay and Kronos systems. Complete CO work schedules. Develop and write timely performance evaluations for assigned COs.
  • Documentation & Investigations: Complete staff investigations thoroughly and on time. Maintain all pertinent information in the Supervisor daily log and make all necessary entries and changes in the ICON system.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • 1) Three years of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work, one year of which must have been as a correctional officer in a juvenile or adult community/ institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • 2) All of the following (a and b):
    • a. One year of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work; and
    • b. A combination of a total of two years of education and full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • 3) Eighteen months of full-time work experience as a counselor of offenders in a community/ institutional corrections or jail security program.
  • 4) A combination of a total of eighteen months of education and full-time experience (as described in number three), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
  • 5) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes any of the following:
    • a. Six months of full-time work as a Senior Correctional Officer;
    • b. One year of full-time work as a Correctional Counselor or State Industries Technician; or
    • c. Two-and-a-half years of full time work as a Correctional Officer or Correctional Food Service Coordinator.

Some positions in this class may require an applicant to have the ability to pass a background investigation.
