Job summary

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women, part of the State of Iowa, seeks a capable supervisor for the afternoon shift (1:00 PM – 11:00 PM) with 6d/4d, 5d/5d, or 5d/3d rotations to maintain orderly operations and safety.

You will supervise COs, oversee rounds, manage training, and handle time/leave in WorkDay and Kronos, plus evaluations and investigations in the ICON system. Background checks may be required.

Qualifications

• Three years of full-time correctional or law enforcement experience, one year as a correctional officer in juvenile or adult settings.
• One year of full-time experience in correctional or law enforcement work; and a combination of education and full-time experience totaling two years, where thirty semester hours in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equate to one year of experience.
• Eighteen months of full-time experience as a counselor of offenders in a community/institutional corrections or jail security program.
• A combination of eighteen months of education and full-time experience as described above, where thirty semester hours in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equate to one year of experience.
• Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes either six months as a Senior Correctional Officer; one year as a Correctional Counselor or State Industries Technician; or two-and-a-half years as a Correctional Officer or Correctional Food Service Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Shift Supervision & Security: supervise staff on assigned shifts, visit all living/working units, and document rounds.
• Staff Management & Development: identify training needs and provide coaching, assist with trainings and orientation.
• Administrative & HR Duties: manage CO work time, leave requests, schedules, and write performance evaluations.
• Documentation & Investigations: complete staff investigations and maintain logs and entries in ICON system.

Job description

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women is a multi-faceted facility that serves as the sole female facility and female reception center for the Iowa Department of Corrections.

Schedule:

• Shift: Afternoon shift (1:00 PM – 11:00 PM)
• Rotation: 6 days on/4 days off, 5 days on/5 days off, 5 days on/3 days off

Key Responsibilities:

• Shift Supervision & Security
  • Supervise employees during assigned shifts.
  • Visit all staffed areas and living/working units for incarcerated individuals once per shift, documenting rounds using a PDA.
  • Assign area and personal offender searches.
  • Ensure the overall orderly operations of the institution.
• Staff Management & Development
  • Identify training and developmental needs for Correctional Officers (COs), providing necessary coaching to improve job performance.
  • Assist with training sessions and orientation as designated.
• Administrative & HR Duties
  • Maintain, approve, and deny CO work time and leave requests within the WorkDay and Kronos systems.
  • Complete CO work schedules.
  • Develop and write timely performance evaluations for assigned COs.
• Documentation & Investigations
  • Complete staff investigations thoroughly and on time.
  • Maintain all pertinent information in the Supervisor daily log and make all necessary entries and changes in the ICON system.

Requirements

1. Three years of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work, one year of which must have been as a correctional officer in a juvenile or adult community/institutional corrections or jail security program.
2. All of the following (a and b):
   • One year of full-time work experience in correctional or law enforcement officer work; and
   • A combination of a total of two years of education and full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
3. Eighteen months of full-time work experience as a counselor of offenders in a community/institutional corrections or jail security program.
4. A combination of a total of eighteen months of education and full-time experience (as described in number three), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in penology, police science, psychology, sociology, or social work equals one year of full-time experience.
5. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes any of the following:
   • Six months of full-time work as a Senior Correctional Officer;
   • One year of full-time work as a Correctional Counselor or State Industries Technician;
   • Two-and-a-half years of full time work as a Correctional Officer or Correctional Food Service Coordinator.
