Under the direction of the Camp Commander, the Assistant Camp Commander is responsible for supervising the security, health and welfare of the incarcerated individual population; monitoring and supervising the custody staff and providing staff training and performance evaluations; and assisting in the maintenance of an efficient camp operation that satisfies all legal mandates and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) policies and procedures. The Assistant Camp Commander is a first line supervisor responsible for direct supervision when acting in the capacity of Strike Team Leader. The Assistant Camp Commander must be able to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. The Assistant Camp Commander must be available for emergency assignments. The Assistant Camp Commander is expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times, in such a manner as not to bring discredit or embarrassment to the Department. The Assistant Camp Commander is expected to keep abreast of camp and department policies and procedures and attend all scheduled training and meetings.

Working Conditions

About this location -- The primary mission of Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals, to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for the training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers male camps located throughout California.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of correctional administration, rehabilitation and methods of discipline, as it applies to persons under restraint, to effectively provide public safety and comply with Federal and State laws, court mandates, regulations, etc. Principles and practices of personnel supervision, training and discipline to effectively supervise the daily operation of the facility/work site. First Aid/Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation to effectively provide first responder/emergency medical care. The use and care of firearms for the safety of staff, Incarcerated Persons and the public. The Department’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) objectives to ensure the workplace is free of discrimination and sexual harassment. A supervisor’s role in the EEO Program and the processes available to meet the Department’s EEO objectives as it relates to the supervision and management of departmental personnel. Ability to: Plan, assign, and direct the work of others to effectively supervise an area of responsibility and ensure the safety of staff, Incarcerated Persons and the public. Control, direct and instruct Incarcerated Persons, individually and in groups, to maintain the orderly operation of the facility and ensure the safety of staff, Incarcerated Persons and the public. Interpret and enforce all rules and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality to ensure compliance. Promote acceptable attitudes and behavior of Incarcerated Persons or Supervised Persons and rate their conduct and productivity accurately and impartially to assist with the rehabilitation process. Think and act quickly in emergencies in order to determine and implement effective and appropriate courses of action. Make arithmetic computations in order to account for Incarcerated Persons and manage resources. Analyze situations accurately to determine and implement effective and appropriate courses of action. Interpret and apply rules and instructions to ensure program compliance. Effectively enforce the department’s Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) objectives in order to create and maintain a fair and equitable work environment free of harassment and discrimination. Use computers and software programs to input, retrieve and update database information and monitor, track and supervise staff/ Incarcerated Persons assignments.
