Job summary

City of Virginia Beach is seeking a part-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join the Adult Correctional Services team. The role includes providing psychiatric care to adults with mental health and co-occurring disorders within the jail setting and in community follow-up, under supervision by the Medical Director and department leadership.

Applicants must hold VA NP licensure with prescriptive authority and a valid DEA number, have a minimum of three years in psychiatric/mental health

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a nursing-related field.
• Three years’ experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing.
• Virginia license as a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority and a DEA number within 90 days of position.
• Must have current and valid driver’s license.
• Certification as NP by ANCC or AANP with prescriptive authority in Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Provide psychiatric services to adult mental health and substance use population, including diagnosis and treatment.
• Order and interpret laboratory tests and EKGs for screening and diagnosis.
• Prescribe appropriate psychotropic medications.
• Refer clients to medical or clinical services as needed and assist with patient assistance programs.
• Provide information, instruction and counseling on health maintenance and illness prevention.
• Manage patient caseload and document medical direction and supervision as required by boards.
• Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals as needed.
