Job description

Overview

Corrections professionals in Vermont work within a system that emphasizes the fundamentals of human change. Intensive training prepares entry-level Correctional Officers for a career that combines security work, human services, and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding on many levels and utilizes a broad range of skills. Many permanent positions are filled through promotions from temporary roles; therefore, external candidates are encouraged to apply for both temporary and permanent openings.

Training

Your correctional career begins with a week at the facility observing correctional officer duties, followed by six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy to learn core correctional skills. After graduation, you will undertake eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your assigned facility.

The start date depends on your availability. Positions operate on a 2-shift schedule, 6am - 6pm and 6pm - 6am, with shifts assigned based on seniority and facility needs.

Work Schedule and Benefits

We are introducing the innovative 2-2-3 schedule, offering a better work-life balance. In this rotation, you work two days, then two days off, followed by three days, then another two days off, repeating this cycle. This schedule provides predictable hours, flexibility, longer consecutive days off, and a 3-day weekend every other week.

Benefits of the 2-2-3 schedule include:

  • Working just 7 out of every 14 days instead of 10
  • Regular two- or three-day breaks
  • Balanced day or night shifts
  • Predictable four-week rotation cycles
  • Fewer workdays per year, allowing more personal time
Core Values and Equal Opportunity

All employees adhere to practices of customer service, holistic service, strength-based relationships, and results orientation. The Vermont Department of Corrections is an equal-opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We encourage applications from women, people of color, bilingual and bicultural individuals, LGBTQ+ persons, and people with disabilities.
