Intensive training prepares entry-level Correctional Officers for a career that combines security work, human services, and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding on many levels and utilizes a broad range of skills. Many permanent positions are filled through promotions from temporary roles; therefore, external candidates are encouraged to apply for both temporary and permanent openings.
Your correctional career begins with a week at the facility observing correctional officer duties, followed by six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy to learn core correctional skills. After graduation, you will undertake eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your assigned facility.
The start date depends on your availability. Positions operate on a 2-shift schedule, 6am - 6pm and 6pm - 6am, with shifts assigned based on seniority and facility needs.
We are introducing the innovative 2-2-3 schedule, offering a better work-life balance. In this rotation, you work two days, then two days off, followed by three days, then another two days off, repeating this cycle. This schedule provides predictable hours, flexibility, longer consecutive days off, and a 3-day weekend every other week.

Applicants must pass background investigations, including criminal record, DMV, and abuse registry checks. Candidates with felony convictions or recent misdemeanors require a waiver from the Corrections Commissioner. Additional requirements include physical fitness, ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and passing mandated annual training.
Work is performed mainly within correctional facilities, often in high-stress situations with potential physical risks. Valid driver's license required. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent with two years of full-time work, or college coursework with corresponding experience. Physical ability to perform essential tasks, including emergency procedures, is required.
Preferred experience includes correctional or military backgrounds. Overtime, weekend, and holiday work are conditions of employment. Felony convictions disqualify applicants unless a waiver is obtained. Background checks are mandatory.
