Job description

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

1. Education:

GL-07: One full academic year of graduate education with major study in criminal justice, social science, or other field related to the position.

GL-08: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level.

1. Experience:

GL-07 and GL-08: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Some examples of qualifying experience are:

For GL-07:

• Experience in receiving and admitting newly committed offenders, including proper disposition of personal property and funds.
• Experience in mail handling procedures, maintaining logs for accountability, and reviewing incoming mail and materials under the agency’s policies.
• Experience relaying information regarding receiving, discharge, and mail room operations to inmates.
• Experience running reports and verifying inmate information via systems like Sentry.

For GL-08:

• Experience related to functions of the Mailroom and Receiving/Discharge areas, including admission, release, physical processing, and transfers.
• Supervising large groups of inmates during transport preparations, including security procedures and searches.
• Properly releasing inmates who have completed their sentences, including identification and paperwork review.
• Coordinating exchanges of custody with federal and non-federal agencies.

Medical Requirements:

The Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons requires that applicants for Correctional Officer positions be physically capable of performing duties involving mental and physical exertion, including prolonged walking, standing, restraining prisoners, and participating in escape hunts. Applicants must be free from defects or diseases that pose employment hazards. Health and physical fitness are essential.
