Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking qualified correctional officers for Kirkland CI in Gilliam Psychiatric Hospital, with multiple shifts available. Requirements include 12 months' experience in corrections or security, U.S.

citizenship, 18+ years old, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver’s license. Completion of the Correctional Officer Basic Certification within six months is required.

Qualifications

• 12 months' experience in corrections, security, military or police work.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• 18 years of age or older.
• High school graduate or GED.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Tattoos: Must not be offensive and/or gang related or visibly located on the face or head; neck tattoos evaluated case-by-case.
• Must pass a medical assessment administered by SCDC.
• Must successfully complete the Correctional Officer Basic Certification Course within six months of placement.
• Must be certified.

Responsibilities

• Inspect the exercise yard for contraband and ensure fences, braces, and tie downs are secured and intact.
• Provide direct supervision of all wing activities and functions.
• Conduct security checks at least every 30 minutes on an irregular basis (Safe cells 15 minutes). These checks will be recorded in the Logbook and Zebra Scanners.
• Conduct count, showers and shake down cells.
• Prepare and submit written reports of all events.
• Maintain surveillance and search for contraband.
• Ensure the highest standard of cleanliness and sanitation at all times.
• Ensure Multi-Threat Vest and face shield are properly worn by all staff on the wing.
• Ensure inmates are strip-searched and restrained to the highest level of security prior to entering/exiting the cell.
• Report inmate complaints for action to be taken.
• Escort inmates for structured activities.
• Any other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
