Job summary

City of New York's Department of Correction seeks a Staff Physician to conduct medical evaluations of Correction Officer candidates. Under executive direction, you will determine fitness for duty using exams, tests, and review of medical records.

You will also answer questions from candidates and nursing staff. The assignment includes reviewing documentation from private physicians and lab results, with opportunities to contribute to public health initiatives and ensure a safe, healthy candidate

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either board certification issued by the American Specialty Board or current approved application for admission to the certifying examination.
• For Assignment II: one year of satisfactory experience in the specialty after meeting minimum requirements.
• For Assignment III: Master’s in Public Health and two years of epidemiology experience; Epidemic Intelligence Service program can substitute for degree.
• For Assignment IV: valid NY license; three-year residency in internal medicine/family practice/pediatrics; board certification or eligibility in Infectious Disease or Pulmonary Medicine; two-year fellowship in related subspecialty.

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The DOC Applicant Investigation unit seeks to recruit a Staff Physician to perform medical evaluations of potential Correction Officer candidates. Under executive direction and with latitude to exercise independent judgment, the incumbent will examine candidates utilizing appropriate medical equipment or tests to evaluate medical qualifications of individuals; and make determinations on whether candidates are medically fit to perform the duties of the position of Correction Officer. The Staff Physician will perform a Medical Examination of the candidates, review all testing done at AIU, as well as review candidates’ medical documentation from private physicians and all labs or Clearances requested to make determinations as to the candidates’ fitness for duty. The candidate will also be available answer any questions from candidates, or our Nursing & Support Staff.

CITY MEDICAL SPECIALIST (PART- - 53040

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
• Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or
• Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.

To be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area.

To be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must possess:

• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
• A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree; and
• At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience.

To be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess:

• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
• Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
• Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and
• Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
