Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is seeking a Vocational Nurse (LVN) to provide direct patient care in a correctional facility, under RN supervision. You will document care, manage medications, and support clinical staff within established protocols.

Ideal candidates will hold a Texas LVN license, CPR certification, and have completed an approved nursing program; NCLEX-PN must be passed for new grads. This on-site role offers benefits and opportunities for professional growth.

  • Current Vocational Nurse License in Texas or ability to transfer within 120 days.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Graduated from an approved, accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass NCLEX-PN on the first attempt.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing services to patients in the health facility following standards of care.
  • Document activities concisely in patients’ health records.
  • Ensure clinical equipment is in good working order and report malfunctions immediately.
  • Administer medications following policies and document in medication systems and records.
  • Receive, assess, and respond to patient care requests with timely documentation.
  • Perform nursing rounds as per department standards and document all findings.
  • Oversee LVNs and other clinical staff within the facility.
  • Perform additional duties within the scope of the job classification.

Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned correctional facility. They function within their legal scope of practice and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organization and practice setting. Work is performed under the direction of a registered nurse as part of a total correctional managed health care team in providing safe and competent care to patients.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Provides direct nursing services to patients in the health facility following standards of care of the department. Timely, concisely, and appropriately documents activities in patients’ health records.
  • Ensures clinical health equipment and technology is in good working order, and maintains equipment according to departmental standards. Including operational use, cleaning/sterilization protocols. Immediately reports inoperable equipment per departmental standards.
  • Assistance in exams and procedures is conducted within the RN scope of practice. All activities are clearly, concisely documented in patients’ health records. Specimens taken during exam or procedure are labeled at patient's bedside.
  • Ensures patient medications are administered following clinical and compliance policies and procedures. Activities are documented clearly and concisely in medication systems and patients’ health records timely and accurately.
  • Receives, documents, assesses, and responds to patient care requests according to policy and standards of the department. Clearly, concisely, and timely documents activities in the patient’s health records.
  • Nursing rounds will be performed per department standards; any and all complaints are documented in patients’ health records. Additional healthcare needs are requested as needed.
  • Oversees the clinical practice of LVNs and other clinical personnel in the health facility
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in the job classification and/or position description
Required Qualifications

Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Current CPR certification. Graduated from an approved, accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX- PN) on the first attempt. No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 or more years of experience in nursing
  • Acute care (Med/Surg, ICU, ER) nursing experience
  • Previous experience working in a correctional environment
