Qualifications

• Three or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility, with at least one year in a supervisory role.
• One year must have been as a Correctional Sergeant or Senior Probation and Parole Assistant with the Missouri Department of Corrections (military service may substitute for up to one year of custody experience).
• A valid high school diploma or equivalency is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist/relief shift supervisor in an adult correctional facility or related units.
• Supervise and instruct lower-level Correctional Officers; monitor performance.
• Direct major activities such as control center operations or reception/orientation processes.
• Patrol living quarters, grounds, and buildings to observe offender behavior and officer effectiveness.
• Discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders and refer serious issues to proper staff.
• Perform rounds to ensure staff are on duty and offenders are accounted for.
• Investigate offender disturbances and maintain discipline; enforce rules and regulations.
• Participate in staff training and adhere to established procedures; may require physician exam and license.
• Some posts may require a valid vehicle operator’s license.
