Job summary

The City of New York Comptroller’s Office, Bureau of Law & Adjustment, is seeking a Claim Specialist Level II to conduct thorough investigations of City claims, review records, assess liability and damages, and prepare objective evaluations for settlements or litigation. The role requires disciplined analysis, precise documentation, and effective communication with agencies and claimants.

You will maintain claim files, prepare abstracts, and use multiple data sources to support risk assessment.

Qualifications

• Must have a degree or equivalent combination of education and experience as described in the qualifications.
• Experience in investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss is considered.
• Ability to analyze liability, damages, and prepare concise evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a full investigation of claims against the City, reviewing agency reports and medical records, analyzing liability, and evaluating damages.
• Maintain claim files, prepare abstracts, document events, and upload documents.
• Use databases and other sources to gather information relevant to investigations.
• Offer sound recommendations on settlements, disallowance, or litigation.
• Negotiate settlements within delegated authority where appropriate.
• Identify fraudulent claims and provide risk management input.
• Maintain backlog control and timely follow-up to bring claims to resolution.
• Communicate professionally with colleagues, agencies, claimants, and attorneys.
• Perform other related assignments and special projects.

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience investigating and/or settling claims

Four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of full-time satisfactory experience investigating and/or settling claims

Satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to 1–3
