Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or related field.
  • Understanding of environmental sustainability principles and ESG programs.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 or other EMS.
  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience 0–2 years in environmental compliance in manufacturing or industrial settings.
  • Internship experience in environmental/sustainability fields preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental compliance and ISO 14001 internal audits at Carpenter locations.
  • Support sustainability reporting activities: data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Prepare environmental audit reports, sustainability reports, technical documents and communications.
  • Develop and deliver environmental training programs for facility personnel.
  • Assist with permits, regulatory reporting, contingency planning, and technical issues.
  • Interpret federal, state, and local environmental regulations for operations.

Corporate Environmental Specialist I

Location: Reading, PA

Reports To: Environmental Program Manager

Position Summary

Carpenter Technology is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Corporate Environmental Specialist I to support environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and continuous improvement programs across Carpenter manufacturing and distribution facilities. This role assists in implementing and enhancing environmental programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting ISO 14001 conformance, and contributing to the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. The successful candidate will work closely with facility personnel, engineering, operations, and corporate teams to provide environmental guidance, analyze data, conduct audits, support sustainability reporting, and drive environmental excellence throughout the organization. This position offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early‑career professionals looking to develop expertise in environmental compliance and sustainability within a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct environmental compliance and ISO 14001 internal audits at Carpenter locations.
  • Support and coordinate company‑wide sustainability reporting activities, including data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Prepare environmental audit reports, sustainability reports, technical documentation, and compliance‑related communications.
  • Develop and deliver environmental training programs for facility personnel.
  • Assist site representatives with environmental permits, regulatory reporting, contingency planning, and technical environmental issues.
  • Research and interpret federal, state, and local environmental regulations applicable to Carpenter operations.
  • Support compliance assurance activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the development, administration, and maintenance of environmental policies and procedures.
  • Present environmental, sustainability, and compliance information in both virtual and in‑person settings.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and site personnel to identify and implement practical environmental solutions.
  • Travel to Carpenter facilities as needed to provide environmental support and training.
  • Participate in ESG‑related initiatives and sustainability performance improvement efforts.
  • Perform additional environmental and sustainability assignments as required.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Understanding of environmental sustainability principles and corporate ESG programs.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 or other environmental management systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret, summarize, and present data effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Minitab, Tableau, or other data visualization and analytical tools is a plus.
  • Experience 0‑2 years of environmental compliance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Internship experience supporting environmental, sustainability, engineering, or manufacturing operations preferred.
  • Experience analyzing problems and developing practical solutions in a team‑based environment is beneficial.
