Job Description:

The Core Facilities Manager oversees the technical, administrative, financial, and logistical operations of the NMR core facility and the Mass Spectrometer core facility in the Department of Chemistry. The incumbent will assist facility users (students, post-docs, researchers) with spectra analysis using current technologies and provide regular training to users on routine and advanced NMR technology. Additionally, the incumbent will consult and assist facility users with mass spectrometry-based analysis of synthetic organic and inorganic molecules, natural products, metabolites, oligonucleotides, peptides, and proteins.

The incumbent will be responsible for the overall operation of the facilities, including the maintenance and management of facility instruments, training all users, and oversight of operational costs. They will also collaborate with and contribute to internal and external facility proposals.

Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field, spectroscopist preferred but not required, or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated expertise in modern applications of NMR and Mass Spectrometry, including operation and maintenance.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in the operation and maintenance of a mass spectrometer and NMR required.
  • Strong background in mass spectrometry and chromatographic techniques and analyses, hands-on experience with related instrumentation, data analysis software, methods, and applications.
  • Experience in using and managing mass spectrometry systems for the characterization of chemical and biochemical samples in an academic setting.
  • Expertise with UNIX operating system, NT workstations; familiarity with 3-channel instruments.
  • Knowledge of electronics, computers, and vacuum systems.
  • Knowledge of small organic and inorganic molecules, natural products, oligonucleotides, peptides, and proteins, as well as standard methods of analyzing these molecules, is a plus and preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of the principles of mass spectrometer (MS), gas chromatography (GC), and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Experience with GC-MS, HPLC-MS, and HPLC operation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Working knowledge of one or more commercial instrument platforms (e.g. Thermo, Agilent, Waters) and data processing software (e.g. Chemstation, MassHunter, Xcalibur) will be beneficial.
  • Exercise practical judgment within broadly defined practices to evaluate and select approaches and techniques for obtaining the most effective solutions.
  • Experience in training users in mass spectrometry, chromatographic instrumentation, and analysis.
  • Familiarity with preparing instrumentation grant applications is desirable.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of students and researchers and cultivate collaborative relationships.
  • Must be able to multitask and prioritize various aspects of facility operation, including recognizing and resolving issues that involve a certain degree of complexity.
  • Ability to organize time and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage relationships with a diverse range of department and university partnerships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data, financial analysis, and planning.
