Job Description

Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and student-centered professional to serve as Coordinator of Career Development Services.

The Coordinator will lead the development and delivery of comprehensive career development services for MGCC students and alumni while strengthening connections among students, academic programs, Workforce Solutions, employers, and the regional community.

This position will serve as a primary resource for career development, employer engagement, experiential learning, and workforce credential attainment. The Coordinator will provide direct services to students while developing employer partnerships, coordinating career events, supporting internships and externships, assisting students with industry-recognized credentials, and promoting career readiness throughout the College.

The successful candidate will thrive in a small-college environment where collaboration, initiative, flexibility, and relationship-building are essential. The position works closely with Academic Affairs, Student Services, Workforce Solutions, faculty, academic program heads, employers, alumni, and community partners to help students successfully transition from education to employment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Career Services: Develop and deliver comprehensive career services for students and alumni, including career coaching, workshops, career fairs, mock interviews, resume assistance, job-search support, and career-readiness programming.
  • Build Employer Partnerships: Develop relationships with regional employers and community partners to create employment, internship, externship, job-shadowing, and work-based learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate Experiential Learning: Manage internships, externships, and other work-based learning opportunities in collaboration with Academic Affairs, faculty, academic programs, and employers.
  • Support Workforce Credential Attainment: Help workforce students identify, prepare for, and complete industry-recognized credentials, including coordinating testing and addressing barriers to completion.
  • Promote Career Services College-Wide: Present in SDV 100 and Workforce Solutions courses, maintain Career Services visibility across MGCC locations, engage alumni, and support recruitment and College events.
  • Manage Career Resources and Technology: Maintain the digital job board, career-management resources, technology platforms, and promotional materials used to deliver Career Services.
  • Collect and Analyze Data: Track Career Services participation, employer engagement, experiential learning, credential attainment, and other outcomes; prepare assessment reports and support QEP activities.
  • Collaborate Across the College: Partner with Academic Affairs, Workforce Solutions, Student Services, faculty, administrators, employers, and community organizations to improve student career outcomes.
  • Represent MGCC Externally: Serve as a College representative at employer, workforce development, recruitment, community, and regional economic-development events.
  • Provide Program Leadership: Serve as the primary coordinator and college-wide resource for career development and employer engagement while continuously evaluating and improving Career Services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Higher Education, Education, Career Development, Human Resources, Workforce Development, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of career development, employer needs, workforce preparation, student development, or a related area.
  • Current Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Career Coach Certification, National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Coach Certification, or similar career-development credential; or willingness to obtain an appropriate credential within an established timeframe.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, employers, and community partners.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in career services, workforce development, higher education, employer relations, student services, human resources, or a related field.
  • Experience coordinating internships, externships, work-based learning, or experiential learning programs.
  • Experience developing and maintaining employer partnerships.
  • Experience planning and implementing career fairs, hiring events, workshops, or other career-related programs.
  • Experience working with industry-recognized credentials or workforce certifications.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting program data.
  • Experience working with career-management systems, job boards, or other career technology.
  • Experience working with community colleges or other educational institutions.
  • Experience leading projects, programs, committees, or cross-functional initiatives.
  • Experience supervising, hiring, or leading employees is preferred but not required.
